If you can read some Yiddish, try reading the Yiddish passage above, which comes with a special feature: every time you click on a word, the English translation appears!

Reb Chaim Volozhiner’s Candlesticks

by Naomi Derman Bloch

These candlesticks belonged to my great-great-grandmother who was the daughter of Rabbi Shloyme Zalmen Volozhiner, also known as Reb Zelmele. His brother was Reb Chaim, the successor to the Gaon of Vilna and founder of the venerable Volozhiner Yeshiva in 1806.

Reb Zelmele passed away at a young age – about 32 years old. After he died, Reb Chaim took care of his family.

When Reb Zelmele’s daughter was married, Reb Chaim gave her this pair of candlesticks which were then handed down from generation to generation.

Today, one candlestick is with my son, and the other – with my cousin in Israel.
